Welcome to Notes From Three Pines
Over the next three months, we’ll be exploring all aspects of Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache Books
Hi friends,
First, thank you so much for subscribing to Notes from Three Pines. We have a great run of essays from a standout group of writers, and we’re so excited to have you aboard.
If you’re up to it, leave a comment introducing yourself and explaining what you like about Louise Penny’s books. Everyone who comments will be entered to win a raffle for pencils that say “I’m F.I.N.E” on them.
Coming Soon
Starting next Wednesday through the end of the year, we’ll share a post — or two — each week, exploring one aspect of the Inspector Gamache books. Essays include:
Author and Eastern Townships native Amy Tector on the region where Three Pines is located.
Essayist and poet Nancy Reddy on the mouthwatering food in Penny’s books.
Author and newsletter writer Neal Thompson on the use of poetry in the series.
Writer and critic Courtney Cook on the incomparable Ruth Zardo.
Science writer Caroline Delbert on the science of murder.
Notes from Three Pines is a cross between an essay collection and a fan zine. We feel strongly that work like Penny’s, written by a woman and broadly considered “genre fiction,” isn’t taken as seriously or deeply as it should be. Each essay is a chance to correct that.
We invited contributors to respond to Louise Penny’s work however they liked — from a personal essay to a research piece to a slam poem — mostly, we have essays, but if someone has a slam poem or fan art, please get in touch. You can always email us at notesfromthreepines@substack.com

The food descriptions are wonderful! And, who knew I would actually crave a licorice pipe while reading a mystery??
Beth from Colorado
Hi! I’m Heather from Denver, Colorado. I love how Louise Penny uses setting in her stories. Three Pines and the snowy woods are characters all on their own.
