My significant other and I will be buried in a pet cemetery with the ashes of our two Italian Greyhounds, Jazz and Rock. They currently reside in an urn on our fireplace mantle. On the back of our communal headstone is Agnes Sligh Turnbull’s quote: “Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really.”
I read this while sitting outside a coffee shop with my 5 month old pup and loved everything about this essay. She can still be a tiny terror sometimes, so I laughed at the Bishops words on sin. But darn she makes up for it every night when she cuddles with me. She's already taught me to be a better human for sure. Also, Henri might be my favorite LP character.
Kate, I hear you. Mine escaped from her carrier on the plane on Monday night. The man behind me fortunately grabbed her quickly and passed her over the seats to me. But I couldn't be that mad. (Honestly, mostly impressed. How did she get out?)

This is my favorite dog quote of all time!
Wonderful post and so encapsulates how much we need to protect and cherish our animal friends.
You might like this extract from Jane Kenyon’s poem:
Having it Out with Melancholy
6 IN AND OUT
The dog searches until he finds me
upstairs, lies down with a clatter
of elbows, puts his head on my foot.
Sometimes the sound of his breathing
saves my life—in and out, in
and out; a pause, a long sigh. . . .
Oooh.
Okay, this one got me in the throat a little... <3
Your essay has lifted me out of a gray mood, as do LP’s books. Our little old man-dog is still asleep, but I’ll pay extra attention to him today.
Give him a hug for me.
